At 10:30 Thursday morning the angel of death took from our midst Mrs. Bertha Haper. She had been ailing for the past three weeks, but it was only the last few days that her condition became alarming, and heart failure was the direct cause of her death.
Bertha Haper was born Nov. 26th, 1863 in Germany and immigrated to this country with her parents, while a child. The family settled at Dubuque, Iowa, where on May 20th, 1887, she was married to August Haper. Settling on their farm south of town, they lived there until her husband's death, which occurred on June 7th, 1907. Her eldest son, Fred died in July 1913.
She leaves to mourn her loss three sons and three daughters: Henry, August, Otto, Louisa, Mrs. Joe Anderson of Ward, and Mrs. Bishop of St. Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Priebe, and a brother, Mr. Haber of Dubuque.
The funeral was held Friday at the home at one o'clock and at the church at two o'clock conducted by Rev. Engel or Elkton. She was laid to rest in the Ward cemetery.
The pall bearers were Frank Vaarthe, C. L. Pottratz, L. Monk and W. Ecsburg.
Mrs. Haper was an active member of the German church here and was a devoted Christian. She was a kind and good neighbor and a friend to all and she will be greatly missed.
