Johanna was the oldest daughter of Mathias and Sophia Mathison. She was born in Namsos, Norway. She came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1865. She married Jacob Mathison (no relation) on August 28, 1867, in Baldwin, St. Croix County, Wisconsin. They had seven daughters: Sophia, Emma, Anna, Anna (2), Petrina and Alma; and three sons: Mathias, Salmon (Samuel) and Anton. Johanna and her family lived in Baldwin until 1882, when they bought a farm in Brandon Township, Douglas County, Minnesota. She died at her daughter Sophia's house in 1932.
