Glenn Wheeler was born on a train traveling in Oklahoma near Hastings on 26 April 1918. He was the son of Louis Monroe Wheeler and Elizabeth Caroline Wheeler nee Forsythe. He grew up in difficult times as the son of a share cropper during the depression. He joined the military to help his family. He married Lily Eleanor Campbell on 2 November 1941 one month before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. After a very short time together he was called to serve in England as a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber. He flew in thirty missions over Germany after which he was relieved of combat receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, which is the highest honor given to a airman behind only the congressional medal of honor.

After a successful career in the military of over 20 years he retired and worked his way through college working at the Ontario City library. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Cal Poly Pomona, he accepted a job as a teacher in the Chaffey High School District as a driver's education instructor. He worked at both Ontario and Chaffey High School and received a second retirement through the school district. He was known as a good instructor although some students avoided his classes, as they were not easy. His students always received the highest scores in the departmental tests. He became well known throughout the community and respected by former students who later recalled him as having influenced them in their lives.
