Jacob was baptized 30 Aug 1741 at Mertz Church in Rockland Township, Berks County, PA by his parents, John Henry and Anna Maria (Rosemann) Mertz. He lived his life in Rockland Township. He was listed there in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 Census.

He did not leave a will but there is an extensive estate file for him in Berks County records. In that estate file there is a petition filed in 1812 by Jacob’s son, Jacob, stating that Jacob Sr. died in 1811 and left a widow Catherine and five children: Jacob Jr., Benjamin, Elizabeth (unmarried), Ester wife of Ernst Fox and Hannah wife of Daniel Weiser.

Jacob is listed as one of his children on the large cenotaph honoring his father Johann Heinrich at Mertz Church but Jacob is the only one known for sure to be buried there as he alone has a surviving tombstone.

There has been much confusion over the years because there were so many different persons named Jacob Mertz who were born in, and lived at least some part of their lives in, Berks County. Jacob (1741-1811) is the one who was born, lived his life and died in Rockland Township. There were two additional “ first-generation” Jacobs born in Longswamp Township — both of whom moved to Northumberland County before 1790 (and then one of those two moved on to western New York State by 1800). In addition, there were about eight more “ second-generation” persons named Jacob Mertz born in Berks County in the 1770’s or so. Of those, Jacob Jr., son of Jacob (1741-1811) seems to be the only one who also never lived anywhere but Berks County and died there.
