Born of Norwegian parents, Karl Johann Hanson and Carrie (Handeland) Hanson, Charlotte was the 7th of their eight living children in Minnesota. In 1925, she met Elmer Dewey Tharp and they married in 1929 after moving to Los Angeles. They had 3 children in LA, one of which, Ned Roger, died in high school at the age of 17. After Elmer died in 1962, Charlotte (also known as "Chi") married Jim Tilt in 1968. That marriage was cut short when Jim died after a short bout with cancer. She then married Lawrence P. Mercer in 1971. Larry died in 1979.
