Nathaniel West Dandridge was the son of Col. William Dandridge of Elsing Green, King William County and his wife Unity West. Through his mother he was descended from Sir Thomas West, Second Lord De la Warr (1555-1603). He married second Jane Pollard, daughter of Joseph Pollard, Clerk of Goochland County, who survived him and later married Thomas Underwood.

Col Dandridge was a member of the County Court of Hanover and represented the County in the House of Burgesses for the Sessions 1756-58, 1758-61, 1761-64.

In 1764, he vacated his seat in the House by accepting the Office of Coroner for Hanover. Becoming a candidate for the House at the succeeding election, he was defeated by Col. James Littlepage, the owner of South Wales on the South Anna. This was followed by the celebrated, but unsuccessful election contest before the House of Burgesses in which Col. Dandridge was represented by Patrick Henry.
