Thomas Main was the son of Thomas Main and Anna Brown and grandson of Jeremiah Main and widow Ruth Brown, maiden name unknown. Several researchers have decided she is the Ruth Huse who married 1)John Brown at Newbury MA. My research has determined she is not the Ruth Huse/Hewes who married John Brown in Newbury MA; in brief, John Brown m. at Newbury MA, Aug 27 1683 Ruth Hewes/Huse [src: Massachusetts Town & Vital Records; ancestry.com] children: John, Thomas, Joseph, Abel and Ruth. Ruth b. July 1, 1695 was still a "Brown" in 1729 when she signed a receipt for her share of her father's estate. (She is therefore not the Ruth Brown, daughter of widow Ruth Brown, who married John Butler 1714 in Stonington.) Ruth Huse Brown died 1695-1697, as her husband John Brown married 2) Mary Hovey, nee Fellows, widow of Nathaniel Hovey, cordwinder, of Ipswich. Mary BROWN petitioned Feb 21 1699 for guardianship of her son Nathaniel Hovey, age 3, son of Nathaniel Hovey, deceased. John Brown, petitioned Apr 9 1700 for rights of Nathaniel Hovey in the estate of Daniel Hovey, wife Mary Brown, formerly wife of Nathaniel Hovey. Newbury Records show the following children of John Brown and Mary Fellows Hovey: Isaac, Hannah, Mary, Stephen, Benjamin, Abigail, Judith and Enoch. John Brown died Sept 18 1729 and wife Mary was named Executor. See attached photo for distribution which show children and heirs from both his marriage to Ruth and to Mary. [The "widow Ruth Brown" was therefore not the widow of this John Brown, as he was still alive in 1699 when widow Ruth Brown nee Unknown, married at Stonington CT, Jeremiah Main. ] KM
