Adele Gonsoir, age 91, of Groton, SD, passed away on May 6, 2020, at Bethesda Nursing Home in Webster, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, August 8, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wilmot. Visitation will be one hour prior at the church in Wilmot. Inurnment will be in the Wilmot City Cemetery.

While maintaining social distancing guidelines, we are now able to gather for visitations and services. The use of face masks by attendees is recommended.

Adele Canfield was born on November 21, 1928, in Sisseton, SD, to Bryon E. and Lillian (Wickard) Canfield. She grew up on a farm in Becker Township, Roberts County, SD, with her parents, brothers, and sisters. Adele was baptized into the Lutheran faith. She attended country school near Peever, SD. As a young girl, Adele cleaned houses for the neighbors.

Adele married John Biel on November 21, 1945, in Sisseton. John passed away on January 7, 1961. She married Stanley Gonsoir and was baptized into the Catholic faith on May 2, 1964, at St. Marys Catholic Church in Wilmot, SD. Adele and Stanley farmed near Webster beginning in 1964. Stanley passed away on March 29, 1977. She moved into Webster in 1977, and did day-care out of her home. Adele moved to Groton in 2008.

Adele enjoyed farm life. She drove tractors, helped in the fields, pitched bundles, picked rock, and stacked square bales. She had chickens and helped with the pigs, sheep, and beef cows. She also enjoyed milking cows! She liked sewing and embroidering. She cooked and loved to make bread; making bread was what she missed most in her later years.

Left to cherish her memory are: children, David (Kathy) Biel of New York Mills, MN; Randy Gonsoir of Groton, SD; Tim (Kristen) Gonsoir of Groton, SD; Arlene (James) Olson of Andover, SD; Blanche (Duane) Lewandowski of Peever, SD; Lillian (Todd) Herr of Webster, SD; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brothers: Lauren (Deloris) Canfield of Swansea, SC; Dale Canfield of Bertha, MN; sister, Joyce (Roland) Sailer of Rapid City, SD; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: John Biel and Stanley Gonsoir; son, Robert; daughter, Connie; granddaughter, Hailey; two great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy; brothers: Gene, Grant, and Larry.
