Mary Matta was born in Houston, Texas on August 14, 1926 to Elisco Bernal and Abigail Garcia Bernal. Mary attended public and secretarial schools in Houston.

Mary met her future husband at a civic club meeting, after WWII. Mary and Romeo married on Feb 4, 1951 after Romeo had graduated from The University of Houston and had worked for 2 years. They were happily married for 67 years. After her marriage she moved to Tulsa where she worked for General Electric. In 1960 she moved to Bartlesville when her husband went to work at Phillips Engineering Dept. and she at the YMCA until retirement.

Mary was an active member of a prayer group, birthday club and a civic club to raise funds for scholarships to high school graduates. Mary enjoyed traveling. In the late 60s and early 70s she lived in Belgium. She and the other Phillips wives would travel all over Europe while their husbands were working. After returning to Bartlesville, she and her husband made several month-long trips. They traveled Europe by plane, train and car. They covered every country in Europe. Her favorite was traveling by car. They made one trip to Russia, which was interesting and educational.
