OBITUARY

The remorseless and icy hand of death has invaded our community and borne from our midst our much esteemed friend and brother, William Kent. He was born in Warren County August 15th, 1826, was married to Miss Martha Ann Beckworth, daughter of Ananias and Elizabeth Beckworth, March 10, 1853, and joined the Missionary Baptist church in October following. He has been a consistent member of that church ever since, ever remembering that Jesus was his Savior.

He was the son of Thomas and Jerusha Kent of Warren County. He moved to Montgomery County, Georgia, in 1860 and united with Harmony Baptist Church by letter. He served three or four years in the late war, fighting bravely to defend the right of the south, returning home at its close to his dear wife and children who had felt much of the burden of war, but had not yet given him up.

On returning home he, like many others, found his loved ones in a destitute condition, but by manly valor and trusting in God, he went to work and accumulated a sufficient competency for the comfort and support of his loved ones.

Brother Kent was over liberal in contributing money for the purposes of building churches and school-houses. He was the principal means of building the church of which he was a member.

His marriage was blessed with nine children, most of whom are members of the Baptist church. Four of his children are married and five single. He had been a Master Mason for quite a number of years, and was buried under the honors of that institution.

He lived to a good old age, departing this life October 12th, 1892. He died among many of his children who honored him down to his grave. He passed away without a struggle seeming as though he had gone to sleep.

Enlisted January 2, 1863, as a Private in Co. H, 63rd Georgia Infantry, CSA; surrendered in Greensboro, NC, May 15, 1865; paroled at Augusta, GA, June 2, 1865.
