Funeral services for George P. (Jimmy) Hewes, Jr. of 4285 Oaklawn Drive, will be conducted Friday at 10:30 a.m. from St. Andrews Epsicopal Church, with the Rev. Christoph Keller, Jr., rector, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Marshall O. James, assistant rector. He died early Thursday morning in St. Dominic Hospital after a long illness. He was born in New Orleans, La., was raised in Gulfport, and had lived in Jackson since 1920. He was the son of the late George P. and Mary Wallace Henderson Hewes, longtime prominent residents of Jackson. He attended the public schools of Gulfport, the Gulf Coast Military Academy and the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Following a brief period of service in the Armed Forces during World War I, he settled in Jackson, where he was in the general insurance business for a number of years. In recent years he had been associated with E. J. Williams in the real estate business. "Jimmy" Hewes, long identified with the Little Theatre of Jackson, of which he was a charter member, had served as president, chairman of Board of Governors, and had directed and performed in many plays. An ardent sports fan, he was an officer and director of the old Jackson Senator Baseball Club and was a charter member of the Jackson Touchdown Club.

His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Turner Hewes; one daughter, Mrs. Tom B. Scott, Jr.; one son, George P. Hewes, III; a sister, Mrs. Dona H. Kirst, all of Jackson; a brother, Gaston H. Hewes of Gulfport. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Sharon Scott, Deborah Scott, Tommy Scott, III, Charles Christopher Scott, George P. Hewes, IV, and Laura Lee Hewes, all of Jackson.

Interment will be Lakewood Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Jack Barksdale, Dr. G. A. McCarty, Teddy Stout, Hap Weir, Emmett Williams and Wirt Yerger, Sr. Honorary pallbearers will be John W. Saunders, Carl Walters, Woodrow Cole, Tom B. Scott, Sr., Cliff Bingham, Joseh Halbert, Gene Loper, Dr. Samuel L. Stephenson, Jr., Dr. J. Harvey Johnston, Jr., and the Board of Governors of the Little Theatre of Jackson.
