Joseph Edward "Eddie Joe" Akers

Age, 54, of McDowell, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2003, in the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital, following an extended illness. He was the son of the late David "Socker" Akers, and Goldie Beatrice Brown Akers. He was an electrician and coal miner, and was a member of the U.M.W.A. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Kay Akers of McDowell; one son, Joseph C. Akers of McDowell; and one daughter, Lisa Anne Akers of McDowell; four sisters, Doris Little of Price, Patty Lawson of Drift, Sharon Perkins of Printer, and Libby Thompson of Jenkins; and one grandchild, Kelli Suzanne Akers. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Arthur Tackett Jr. Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 12, at 1 p.m., in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel at Martin, with Don Fraley Jr., and Louie Ferrari officiating. Burial was in the Akers Family Cemetery at McDowell, under the professional care of Hall Funeral Home at Martin.
