James C. Adams, Confederate veteran, was born in Ireland on March 17, 1833. After coming to America, Adams joined the Confederate Army on April 28, 1861, in New Orleans, where he was a private in Company D of the 1st Louisiana Infantry. In May and June of 1862, Adams was detached from his company and served as a nurse at the regiment hospital. Due to tuberculosis, which had settled in his lymph node system, and extreme near sightedness, Adams was discharged from the Army on July 16, 1862. Over time, he lost one of his legs due to tuberculosis. He worked as a laborer.

In 1889, Adams moved to Texas and settled in Travis County, where on May 9, 1889, he moved into the Confederate Men's Home. It is not know how long he stayed, but he did move back into the Home on October 9, 1892. A Presbyterian, Adams lived in the Home until his death on December 23, 1911. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day.
