John Thomas O'Neal was born on August 7, 1881 in Giles County, Tennessee, the son of William A O'Neal (1847–1916) and Wilmoth Malone "Willie" (Abernathy) O'Neal (1859–1884).

He was married in 1904 to Aubrie Lee Abernathy (1884–1974), and later they were divorced.

He grew up in Giles County and went north as a trainer of horses in 1935.

A member of Meridian Street Methodist Church and a retired horse trainer, John was living on Hamilton Road in Nashville and was 75 years old. He had arteriosclerosis and had been at Davidson County Hospital for a little more than 12 months when he had a sudden stroke and died on February 8, 1957.

Survivors included son T H O'Neal in Nashville TN, daughters Mrs W W Knox in Nashville TN and Miss Sue May O'Neal in Pulaski TN, brother Robert O'Neal in Clarksville TN and three grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held at at Cosmopolitan Funeral Home, and burial was on February 9th in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Nashville.
