RICHARD ALGER Richard Earl Alger, 85, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at home, with his wife, at his side. Born March 7, 1933, Earl was a Las Vegas native. He graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1952. He entered the IBEW Local 357 apprenticeship program not long after and worked at Las Vegas Electric, helping wire many of the original hotels and casinos. He owned All Electric Inc. and, later, Sign Service. He married in February 23, 1954, in the St. George Temple. He loved children-his own and others'. He would offer to soothe a stranger's crying child so mom could finish her meal at Macayo's. He served as PTA co-president at then-Bonanza Elementary School and volunteered in the Boy Scouts for 50 years. As a Scoutmaster, he took his troop to the National Scout Jamboree in 1973 and he and his wife took advanced training at the Philmont Scout Ranch. He received the Silver Beaver Award in 2002. LDS Girls' Camp relied on him as an adult leader for many years. He loved hiking, camping and most anything outdoors. Earl was an LDS church all-star fast-pitch softball outfielder as a young man. He coached youth teams and refereed high school basketball throughout the valley for 25 years. In the LDS church, Earl served in the old Third Ward bishopric and as bishop of the 27th ward. He was a Las Vegas Temple ordinance worker for 26 years, including 11 years as a sealer. He and his wife served a temple mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. Dedicated to service, after retirement, Earl did electrical work for folks and drove cancer patients to treatment. He loved woodworking and left many pieces to remember him by.

Obituary written by Sybel Alger

"One of the greatest men I've ever known passed away this morning, he had a stroke on Saturday and continued to decline until he finally passed away this morning. Wayne's mom has always said to Wayne, the problem with you is your too much like your dad, what an honor to know I'm married to a man who is like the kindest, gentlest, most accepting, giving man I know. He served with out question or disregard to your circumstances, your race or gender. Never judging just loving. He could rebuke you but even then you knew it was out of love and concern. He was born in a very humble home, not expected to live, has over come so many illnesses, set backs, even being burned, and has come thru still loving life, not hardened or bitter by the many many trials he has had to endure. He's free at last, reunited with his mother, father, 3 brothers, including his older brother who died in WW II,and an older sister. God be with you til we meet again Grandpa."
