Composer. He was a leading Irish musician of his time, though only his Anglican Church services and anthems are regularly performed today. His compositions include the comic opera "Shamus O'Brien" (1896), the Requiem (1897) and Stabat Mater (1907), seven symphonies, and many chamber and vocal works. Stanford was born in Dublin, and studied at Cambridge University. He was given professorships at London's Royal College of Music in 1883 and at Cambridge in 1888, holding both until his death. It is as a teacher that he is best regarded; his students included Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Frank Bridge, Ernest Farrar, and Herbert Howells. Unsympathetic to modern trends, Stanford was notoriously irascible and quarrelled with many of his contemporaries, notably Edward Elgar. He was knighted in 1902.
