Last Saturday, death, that great leveler of all mankind, visited a home in Walla Walla and claimed a well-known and respected pioneer – one more out of the thinning ranks of the early builders of the west – namely, W.H.H. Brunton. Mr. Brunton had been ill but a few days with neuralgia of the heart and medical aid was unable to stay the hand of death – the summons came in the afternoon of that day and the soul took it’s flight from the earthly to the heavenly temple.
It was quite a surprise to many when the news spread last Saturday because few knew that the deceased was ill at his home on Catherine St. It came, too, with a shock to the many friends who had seen Mr. Brunton on the streets a day or two before. Thus passes out another early settler from among those whom we honor as early builders of our valley.
W.H.H. Brunton was born in Schuyler Co., Ill., in the year 1841, later moving to Missouri. It was at the age of 21 that Mr. Brunton came to this valley and took up his residence.
In 1866 the deceased was united in marriage to Miss Sarah A. Lewis and the issue from this union was nine children living, as follows: Edwin L., Ira D., Frank L., James A., Fred E., Dorsey, Elmer, Alice and Blanche.
By thrift and good management, Mr. Brunton made a success in the farming line, having a large farm near Dixie, where he made his home until a short time ago, when property was purchased on Catherine St., this city.
The funeral occurred on Tuesday morning from the family home. Rev. Lee A. Johnson of the First Methodist Episcopal Church conducted the services. A male quartet furnished music. After the service a long procession formed, proceeding to the DixieCemetery, 10 miles out, where all that was mortal of W.H.H. Brunton was consigned to the earth.
