Bethel Fox Henderson, age 92, passed away on Friday, April 20, 2001, in Austin, Texas
Born December 1, 1908, in Taylor, Nebraska, she was the youngest of the six children of Mr. and Mrs. James Cyrus Fox. In late 1914, the family moved to Custer, South Dakota, where Bethel attended school graduating in 1927. As a youngster Bethel was a very determined girl and that determination became even stronger after her brother, Philip noticed her potential and made a remark that she would be the only member of her family to succeed in the business world.
After attending several business schools, she became a member of the International Fabricare Institute (IFI) in Silver Spring, Maryland. She traveled in the western states as a Pantex representative for IFI and later in the Texas Panhandle for the University of Texas TExtile Department visiting dry cleaning businesses as a spotter operator instructor.
In 1956, she married James (Jim) S. Henderson. Soon after their marriage, they established the Henderson & Henderson Publishing Company, a trade publication for the laundry and dry cleaning industry.
After her husband's death in 1975, she continued as owner/editor of the Textile Maintenance Reporter until, due to her advanced age, the company was dissolved in December of 1991.
She never forgot her early training on the ranch in Custer, South Dakota, and continued to visit the Foxcroft Ranch annually until it was sold in 1994.
"Riding horseback four miles to school in forty degrees below zero weather should be an alert to all high school students that for future success you must be determined to 'hang in there' and get an education whatever the conditions." With this in mind, she established the Mitchell, Woods, Fox Corporate Scholarship for the college tuition of deserving Custer, South Dakota High School graduates.
Bethel was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents; three sisters, Mattie Woods, Katie Jarek and Olive Mitchell; and two brothers, Philip and Nova Fox.
Cremation arrangements are being made by Harrell Funeral Home and interment will be at the Fairmont Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
Memorial donations can be made to the Mitchell, Woods, Fox Corporate Scholarship Fund in Custer, South Dakota.
