He then entered the US Air Force and served from 1960-1964. After his honorable discharge he pursued degrees in education at Fort Hays State. He taught school in Goodland, KS, and Liberal, KS, before becoming an elementary school principal in 1979 in Satanta, KS. In 1985, he relocated to Hibbing, MN and was principal at Jefferson Elementary before coming to Valley Center’s West Elementary for the remainder of his career. As a well respected educator, he was known for creating fun at school, yet serious about student achievement. Remembered for making every student feel special, he had nicknames for all of them and a boisterous laugh heard through the hallways. His contagious smile, sense of humor, caring and kindness will be dearly missed. Bruce also enjoyed all things outdoors- gardening, hunting, fishing and helping on the family farm.
He is survived by two children: Belinda (Matt) Ratke of Tacoma, WA and Jill Ford of Wichita. He has six grandchildren: Cory Leek, Adam and Alex Ratke of Tacoma WA and Whitney, Ella and Torie Ford of Wichita. Brothers Jack (Elain), Gail (Claudene) and Victor (Glenda) and sister Jean as well as many nieces/nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by son, Gavin Anspaugh, grandchild Abigail, parents Kenneth and Ferol, brothers Hiram and Keith, sister Mavis.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established with Valley Center school district.
