Orville Leland Davis, Jr. (O.L.), 87, of Morristown, passed away on April 17, 2020 form complications of dementia, at home with his wife and daughter by his side.
O.L. left his wife of 63 years, Wanda Sue Cummings Davis; daughter, Beth Ann (Johnny) Tedder, of the home; son, Scott (Melinda) Davis; and grandson, Austin Davis, of Mobile, AL. Born in 1932 in Blount Co., TN, he was the sixth of seven children and the last survivor in his family.
As a U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean War. He graduated from Porter High School in Maryville, received his B.S. degree from Middle Tennessee State University and his M.Ed.+45 from East Tennessee State University.
O.L. was and educator in the Hamblen County School System for 35 years, coaching sports and teaching science and physical education beginning at Morristown Junior High in 1961, then at Fairview-Marguerite Elementary. As a rotating physical education teacher, he taught at Russellville, Southern Heights, Union Heights, Witt, and Whitesburg Elementary schools. He settled in later years at Russellville, retiring in 1996 but still substituting through 2015. Among O.L.’s loves were his vegetable garden, with which he provided for his family, fellow teachers and neighbors. His hobbies included golf, Lady Vol basketball and softball, Volunteer football, picture-framing, and working with his daughter on craft, carpentry and home improvement projects.
The family will be scattering O.L.’s ashes in a private ceremony.
