George John Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll, KG, KT, PC, FRS, FRSE, was the only surviving son of John Campbell, 7th Duke of Argyll, and his second wife, Joan Glassel, the only daughter of John Glassel. He made a significant geological discovery in the 1850s when his tenant found fossilized leaves embedded among basalt lava on the Island of Mull. He also helped to popularize ornithology and was one of the first to give a detailed account of the principles of bird flight in the hopes of advancing artificial aerial navigation.

The Duke of Argyll was married three times. He married firstly, in 1844, Lady Elizabeth Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1824-1878), the eldest daughter of George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland, by whom he had five sons and seven daughters. He was married in 1881 to Amelia Maria (Claughton) Anson (d. 1894), daughter of the Right Reverend Thomas Claughton, Bishop of St Albans, and widow of Augustus Anson. The Duke was married a third time, to Ina, daughter of Archibald McNeill. There were no children from either the second or third marriages.∼He was a pallbearer at the funeral of Charles Darwin in 1882: "Music by Purcell and Croft was sung, as well as an anthem composed for the occasion by the Abbey's deputy organist, J. Frederick Bridge - 'Happy the man that findeth wisdom and getteth understanding'...the service ended with the choir singing Handel funeral anthem - 'His body is buried in peace, but his name liveth forever'" [Frances Spalding, 2001: "Gwen Raverat - Friends, Family & Affections".]

George Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll, was born on 30 April 1823 at Ardencaple Castle, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. He was the son of John Douglas Edward Henry Campbell, 7th Duke of Argyll, and Joan Glassel.
