US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1846 and commenced law practice in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1863. Not candidate for reelection, he served as an assessor of internal revenue, 1864 to 1866. In 1871, he was elected to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, serving until 1875. He was again elected in 1887, to the Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1881. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a solicitor for the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company until his death.
