Herschal Ovel Chest was born on February 4, 1892 in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of Enoch Rushing Chest (1857–1943) and Annah Laura (McCall) Chest (1867–1959).
He was married 1st to Katherine L Chapman (1899–1947), the daughter of john Whiting Chapman (ca 1864- ) and Eva Lee (Payne ) Chapman (ca 1868- ). By about 1925-26 Herschal and Katherine were divorced, with Herschal later marrying Earlie Simmons. On May 8, 1931 Katherine was married 2nd in California to Cletus Ralph Tobar.
A printer at Marshall-Bruce and living at 478 Timmons in Nashville, Herschal was in prison for forgery in California for about a year the mid-1920s.
Herschal was 64 years old and married when he died of natural causes at Mid-State Baptist Hospital on January 30, 1957. Burial was on February 1st in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
