Lewis Joseph Cunningham, Sr., age 88, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning August 1, 2007 at his home in Provo, Utah. He went to join his sweetheart, Nina Beth Ethel Goe whom he married on December 20, 1939 in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. They enjoyed 66 ½ years together before her passing last year. He was born November 20, 1918 at home in Ogden, Utah to Samuel Robert Cunningham and Pauline Naomi Storer.

He was preceded in death by his sweetheart, NinaBeth, parents, in-laws George Goe and Olivette Webb, and step-father in-law J. Hyrum Henry; two brothers: Ralph and Fred, three sisters: Fay, Betty, and Darhl, two sisters-in-law: Jane and Marge, and five brothers-in law Dean, Eugene, Thornley, George, and Robert. He was also preceded in death by his firstborn son, Lewis Joseph (Joe) Cunningham, Jr., who died in a car accident at the age of 18.

He is survived by his brother Les Cunningham of Ogden, his sister and brother-in-law Doris (Roland) Taylor of Burley ID, and his sisters-in law Shirley Cunningham of Ogden, Loma Kate Child of Ogden, and Ruth Goe of Robertson WY; six children and their spouses: Olivette (Jim) Hanson of Draper, Richard (Cathy) of Provo, Naomi (Roy) Dickens of Payson, Jim (Debbie) of Orem, David (Rene) of Provo, and Tom (Darla) of Enoch UT; 38 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren and 2 yet to be born. He has one grandson currently serving a full-time mission in Thailand. After his first two children were born, he was drafted into active duty during World War II and served in the Army Combat Engineers in the South Pacific Islands of Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Marianas, and Kwajalein. He found employment in the railroad, printing industry, farming as a farm hand and owning his own farm, as a truck driver for fluid and bottled milk, factory labor, furniture sales and appliance repair, and retired from Brigham Young University in Auxiliary Maintenance with specific responsibility at Deseret Towers. He acquired his education and skills through hands on, school of hard knocks, and apprentice training. Lew had dedicated his life in service to the LDS Church serving in many callings, including Ward Clerk, High Priest Group Leader, Seventies Quorum Presidency, and as a faithful and loved Home Teacher. He and NinaBeth served as temple workers in the Provo Temple and as missionaries in Osage Beach, Missouri in the Oklahoma Tulsa Mission. Through the years they raised their family in Ogden Utah, Kimberly Idaho, Jerome Idaho and Provo Utah. Lew had a big heart and a deep devotion to his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a man of great integrity and exemplified true Christ-like love to neighbors and all he knew. He could create or repair almost anything, out of anything and would say "See, aren't you glad that I kept this for 20 years?" He had a beautiful tenor singing voice, and sang in many wedding receptions, funerals, and choirs. We will greatly miss his smile, his laughter, his teasing personality, his example, and his "whistling" ear with each hug. Funeral services will be held at the LDS Edgemont 21st Ward Chapel located at 2900 North Timpview Drive (650 East) in Provo, Utah on Saturday, August 4 th at 11am, with a viewing in the Relief Society Room prior to the funeral from 9:30-10:30am, and on Friday, August 3rd from 6:30-8:30pm at the same chapel (not at the funeral home). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross or to the LDS General Missionary Fund. Thank you to all who have shown love to our father over the years and a special thank you to A+ Hospice nurses: Heidi, Marlene and Sheila.
