Vinton; Harry T. Horak, age 86, died Thursday, October 27, 2005 at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended Illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m.. Monday, October 31, 2005 at the Brandon United Methodist Church, in Brandon with Rev. Julie McCullough officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday. A Memorial Fund has been established.
Harry was born September 22, 1919 in Harrison Township of Benton County to Wesley and Marie (Koutny) Horak, Sr.. He graduated from the Brandon High School in 1937.
On February 27, 1940 he married Thelma Lucille Davis at Monticello, Iowa and the couple farmed and raised their family northeast of Vinton.
Prior to beginning his farming career, Harry was employed as a Benton County Maintainer operator. As a farmer and a part-time carpenter, from 1943 until his retirement, Harry was very active in soil conservation at the county and national level. His leadership role, his promotion efforts, and his dedication, made him the recipient of many conservation awards. From 1978 to 1986 he served as a Benton County Supervisor. Harry was a lifelong member of the Brandon United Methodist Church where he served on many committees and held various offices. He was an active supporter of Bear Creek Church where he had been baptized as a child. Harry also served on the Boards of Farmers Savings Bank, and Eden Mutual Insurance Co., and as President of the Red Cedar Chapter Izaak Walton League in 1973, 1989, and 1990.
In his leisure he enjoyed woodworking, traveling, and visiting with his many friends. His warm smile and wonderful sense of humor endeared him to everyone he met.
Harry is survived by his wife, Thelma of Vinton; his children, Shirley (Ross) Wiley of Vinton, H. Lynn Horak (Charlene) of West Des Moines, Allan (LuAnn) Horak of Vinton, Lois (Michael) Jensen of Troy, NY, and Mark (Suzzi) Horak of Mesquite, TX., twelve grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
His parents, his brothers, Wesley, Jr and Milton Horak, his daughter in law, Teri Horak and his grandsons, Joshua and Michael Horak preceded him in death.
