HERMISTON - Frank DeJohn Alvarez, 87, of Stanfield died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6 at Oasis of Hope Church, 1255 S. Highway 395 in Hermiston.
Mr. Alvarez was born June 8, 1921, in Port Arthur, Texas to Bernabe R. and Mary (DeJohn) Alvarez. He was a staff sergeant in the Air Force during World War II, flying on 52 missions. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal, and a Victory Medal.
He married Lorna J. Gabriel in 1945 in The Dalles. They lived in Stanfield for 61 years, where he managed Stewart's Supermarket for 22 years, worked for KOHU radio for two years, and finally retired after 10 years with the East Oregonian as Hermiston's operations manager.
Mr. Alvarez is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lorna of Stanfield; son Doug Alvarez of Stanfield; daughters Patti Martin of Stanfield and Debbie Simmons of Hermiston; brother Gilbert Alvarez of Port Arthur, Texas; sister Virginia Latiolias of Texas; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernabe and Mary Alvarez; brother Angelo Alvarez; and sister Rosa Alvarez.
