Velma J. Hill Hirshey

Velma J. Hirshey, 90 years, a lifelong area resident of Sarcoxie, Mo., departed this life on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at her home.

Velma entered this life on Oct. 3, 1916, near Sarcoxie, one of 10 children born to late Frank and Lenore (Hood) Hill.

On Dec. 25, 1933, she was united in marriage to Loyd R. Hirshey and to this union one daughter was born.

Besides being a devoted homemaker to her husband and daughter, Velma also worked at Elders Manufacturing in Webb City, and later for Juvenile Shoe in Sarcoxie. She was a talented seamstress and was known for her beautiful wedding dresses and precise alterations.

She was involved with the Oats Bus organization, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Sarcoxie Senior Center and was a faithful member of the West Union Church of Christ, near Diamond, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons-in-law, Keith Arner and Glen Patton; a step daughter, Dorothy Duley; a grandson, David Powell; three sisters, Louise Burrow, Dorothy Rimmer and Wilma C. Hill; and six brothers, Clifford, Loyd, Blynn, Cecil, Gene and Calvin Hill.

Velma is survived by a daughter, Wilma Arner Patton of Sarcoxie; a grandson, Dan Arner and wife, Vicki; two great-granddaughters, Rachel Riley and husband, Johnnie and Becky Hogan and husband, Bud; two great-great-grandchildren, Kailey and Cody Riley, all of Sarcoxie; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Velma J. Hirshey are 2 p.m. Monday at the West Union Church of Christ, near Diamond. Evangelist Larry Carlisle officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sarcoxie Cemetery.

Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Keith Garber, David Patton, Eugene Meyer, Gary Strong, Gerald Capps and Bill Willoughby.

The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Housh Funeral Home Chapel in Sarcoxie.

Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of the Housh Funeral Home in Sarcoxie.
