Richard was born in Minot, North Dakota to Tony and Eva Abel on September 23, 1931. He was the oldest of 12 children. As a young man, Richard left North Dakota to join the Army. After his service, he trained to become an electrician and moved to Denver, CO. Shortly after he arrived in Denver, he met his wife Shirley at a dance studio where she was his dance instructor. They were married for 56 years. Richard knew the future was in television, so we went to work at Channel 2 Television, where he retired after 40 years. He took up running later in life and enjoyed local races, and continued to run races well into his 80s. He belonged to Our Lady of Fatima Parish, and was actively involved in the Knights of Columbus and Disabled American Veterans, and could be found volunteering his time with their annual events and fundraisers.

Richard is survived by his Wife: Shirley Abel, of Golden, CO. Four Children: Sandra Abel (Golden), Robert Abel (Castle Rock), Timothy Abel (Aurora), Patricia Lovato, (Castle Rock) Siblings: Daniel Abel, Rose Baker, Jo Hillstrom, Mary Shinn, Chuck Abel, Elizabeth "Betty" Rumrey, Jim Abel, John Abel, Claudia Parman. Seven Grandchildren: Brandon Suazo (Denver), Allysa Suazo (Las Vegas), Jason and Rachel Abel (Aurora), Porter, Sophia and Sawyer Lovato (Castle Rock). Two Great Grand Children: Jorge and Wilton Molina (Las Vegas). He is preceded in death by his Parents: Tony and Eva Abel, and Siblings: Loraine Abel and Gerald Abel.
