1st Lt. Samuel W. Johnson, Company L, 27th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, was mortally wounded in the left lung during the Battle of Lookout Mountain on November 24, 1863. According to Hamilton Walden, a nurse in Company E of the 81st Indiana Regiment, Lt. Johnson died in the U. S. Army General Field Hospital in Bridgeport on December 3, 1863 and was buried in the graveyard there. "His grave is No. 54, there is a small oak tree, or stump standing at the right of his head board two feet from him."

Two other soldiers in the 27th Mississippi Infantry Regiment were mortally wounded in the Battle of Lookout Mountain and died in the U. S. Army General Field Hospital in Bridgeport:
Pvt. Rufus K. McPherson, Company E , born 1832 in Alabama, wounded by gunshot wound fracturing his right thigh and died 12-3-1863.
Pvt. Joseph J. Hickey, Company C, wounded in the abdomen and died 11-25-1863
