Mary Jane Long is the daughter of David Long and Judith Davis.

At the age of 13, Mary Jane, with her parents, 4 siblings, 2 uncles and several cousins traveled across the plains, to Oregon by wagon train. They left April 1, 1852 from Council Bluffs, Iowa. They encountered disease, hunger, thirst, heat, rain and mud. As the teams of oxen grew weak, they had to do more walking. They also encountered the native people and were taken down the Dalles in a canoe by a native American coulple. The hardest part of their journey is the death they encountered. Death did not escape their own family. Mary Jane's uncle and at least 2 cousins died along the way. They finally ended their journey across the plains in late October at Portland, Oregon.

Mary Jane married Humphrey Long (no relation), Feb. 22, 1855 in Marion Co., Oregon.

Mary Jane and Humphrey Long are the parents of Edward Long, Sarah Isabelle Long-DeHaven-Churchill, Zylpha Long-Ball-Keffer-Wright, George Long and Jenerous Long.

Mary Jane married William Ball April 17, 1876 in Marion Co., Oregon. [William was the widower of Mary's cousin Mary Ann Davis]

Mary Jane and William Ball had one daughter together; Lilian Veronica Ball-Feely.

Mary Jane wrote an account of her journey west in 1912 and had it published. I am so thankful that her story can be passed down from generation to generation. At the end of her story she advised if you don't have to pack up and move with your children, DON'T! Of course travel is much easier in the 21st century but it is a testament to the hardships she and her family endured in 1852.

I am proud to say that Mary Jane Long-Ball is my 3X great grandmother.

There is a marker dedicated to Mary and her parents at Masonic Cemetery.
