The full date of death inscribed on his grave marker is illegible in the photograph posted in 2020 but probate documents in Lafayette County show that he died in Gratiot on 26 July 1868. His will was dated 3 February 1868.
An obituary published in Painesville, Lake County, Ohio on 20 August 1868 also gives the death date as 26 July 1868.
There are no burial records for Elmwood Cemetery in Warren, Jo Daviess County, Illinois prior to 15 February 1908. It is unknown whether the grave marker for him in Elmwood Cemetery is a cenotaph or if his remains were relocated to that cemetery after the death of his wife (d. 1871).
