Susan was born May 13, 1946, to the late Billy Dick and Betty Hamilton Brown. Susan is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Carol Brown Maples Herdes; and her nephew Adam Brown. She is survived by her son, Doug Alexander (Ron Snitker) of Nashville, TN; Doug’s half-siblings Jennie Alexander and Travis Alexander of Gallatin, TN; her brother Rich Brown (Jane) of Germantown, TN; and her beloved nephews Jim Troutt of Nashville, TN; Richard Brown (Christin) of Dallas, TX; Paul Troutt (Kelly) of Nashville, TN; Jon Troutt (Kristen) of Murfreesboro, TN; and Tristan Maples of Mount Pleasant, SC.
Susan graduated from Gallatin High School and attended Peabody College before graduating with a B.A. in Education from MTSU. Early in her marriage to Tony Alexander, she dedicated her life to raising their son, Doug, as well as service to her church, First Baptist Gallatin, its children’s ministries, and music both in and out of the church. Later, she pursued various careers in Real Estate, Banking, Mortgage Brokerage, and, later, Wedding and Special Event Videography, with her second husband, Terry Durham.
Susan was known for her smile, her sense of humor and ability to make others laugh, her caring spirit - always putting others first - and, perhaps most of all, her musical talent. Her first joy was singing in the choir and teaching children’s music at First Baptist. She also sang in both choral and solo capacities in many local choruses in the area including the Gallatin Lion’s Club Minstrel Show, The Gallatin Community Chorus, and The Hendersonville Community Chorus. In recent years she enjoyed spending time with friends and family, dancing and listening to live music around Middle Tennessee.
A private burial will take place on Monday, March 30, at Sumner Memorial Gardens with Rev. Dr. Ted Hill presiding. This will be followed by a grand public celebration of her life after the public-gathering restrictions are lifted. Details regarding this memorial celebration of her life will be posted on social media when arrangements are made. This will be no sooner than mid-May or perhaps a few months later, depending on the scope and duration of the current public health crisis.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gallatin High School Choral Music Program, at this website: bit.ly/SusanDurhamMusic.
