Joe Dan Byars, Sr., 67, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, died on Sunday, July 15, 2007 in a Little Rock hospital. Joe was born May 16, 1940 to the late William "Buddy" and Cathline "Billie" Byars.

Joe was raised, and received his early education in Alma, graduating from Alma High School. Joe married his high school sweetheart, Ann, on June 2, 1961. He joined the Army and served as a Second Lieutenant, in the tank command in Korea. After he was Honorably Discharged he received his Bachelors Degree in Business and began his successful career in the insurance business in 1965. He served as General Agent for Aetna Life and Casualty in Fort Smith, Memphis, TN, and in Houston, TX. Joe returned to Fort Smith in 1981. He was the principal of the Byars Agency, serving his life insurance clientele not only with a high level of skill and integrity but as a caring friend.
Joe was a member of First United Methodist Church of Fort Smith and was a member of the Roundtable Sunday School Class.

Services are Thursday at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church with burial at Alma City Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Byars of Fort Smith, three sons, Joe Byars, Jr. and his wife Carla of Fort Smith, AR, William Blake Byars of Hot Springs, AR, and Andrew Scott Byars of Fort Smith, AR, a sister, Georgianna McKown and her husband Conrad of North Little Rock, AR, a brother, Randall Byars and his wife Janice of Little Rock, AR, two daughter-in-laws, Dana Byars and Kris Ann Byars and six grandchildren, Kat, Nick, Beckett, Will, Ben and Sam Byars.

Pallbearers are Carl Davis, Eddie Christian, Morgan Bryant, John Gillenwater, Buddy McMahon, Doug Moore, Sam Sicard and Marshall Yantis.

Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Round Table Sunday School Class

Family visitation will be Wednesday, July 18th from 6-8PM at Ocker Putman Funeral Home, 4500 Jenny Lind, Fort Smith, AR.

Memorials can be made to either: The First Tee of Fort Smith, 5802 Geren Road, Fort Smith, AR 72903 or to First United Methodist Church Missions Council, 200 North 15th Street, Fort Smith, AR 72901.
