Although his name and date of birth is engraved on the Smith mausoleum at Shard Villa, it is believed that he was not entombed there. Thus this is a CENOTAPH. The Boston Medical & Surgical Journal of 23 Apr 1908, p. 568 states: "Dr. Alexander B. McDowell, of New York, while suffering from melancholia, committed suicide on April 15. He was a son of Gen. Irwin [sic, i.e. Irvin) McDowell, who commanded the Union forces at the first battle of Bull Run, and was graduated from the Columbian Medical College, Washington, D. C. in 1891. He had practiced in New York for about three years, and at the time of his death was clinical assistant at the West Side German Dispensary."


Dr. McDowell married (1) 17 Jun 1896 at Shard Villa in West Salisbury, Addison VT Mary Elizabeth Mann SMITH who died the following year. He married (2) Marie CROSBY who died in 1903 giving birth to son, Alexander Byrd McDowell who survived. See FAG #50194456


On the 1900 Census Dr. McDowell was a physician at the New York Infant Asylum in Manhattan.
