Brother Lee Barker, S.C.
(née Eugene Colon Barker)
BROTHER LEE BARKER, S.C., 92, a resident of Mobile, Alabama since 1998, passed into eternal life at the Mobile Infirmary on the Feast of the Annunciation, Wednesday, March 25, 2020.
Brother Lee, born Eugene Colon Barker on September 22, 1927 to the late Dr. Charles Barker of Lockport, LA, and the late Aline Coulon of Thibodaux, LA, was a native of Thibodaux, Louisiana. He is also preceded in death by his brother and sister, Charles Barker and Pamela Barker Dupont, respectively.
As a pre-novice, Brother Lee entered the formation program for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart on September 9, 1945 at Metuchen, New Jersey, and there he professed first vows on August 15, 1947.
The Brothers’ chapel at Saint Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, MS, was the site of his final vows on June 10, 1953, and in 2017 there was a great celebration when Brother Lee marked the 70th anniversary of his first profession.
During his years in ministry, Brother Lee served as teacher, coach, Junior Master, Principal, Provincial Councilor, Provincial, Vocation Director, Local Religious Superior, Director of Residency, and Guidance Counselor. He ministered to young people in the Bronx, NY; Alexandria, LA; Metuchen, NJ; Daphne, AL; New Orleans, LA; Bay St. Louis, MS, and, since 1998, in Mobile, AL. But through most of it, Lee was the consummate magician, always having a trick or two (or more) in the pack he wore on his waist, and working magic in the lives of young people for over 72 years. Whether he was teaching a class, administering a school, or helping a young person overcome homesickness, Brother Lee had a profound influence on everyone with whom he came into contact. He will long be remembered not only as a skilled water ski instructor and discernment facilitator, but as a GIANT in the Province for his leadership, prayerfulness, warm smile and southern charm. To many, he epitomized what it meant to be a Brother of the Sacred Heart.
Funeral services for Brother Lee will be postponed until such time as the pandemic has passed and we can gather to properly remember, pray for and celebrate our Brother.
Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis, MS is in charge of the arrangements.
