Wayne P. Elgert, 81 of Grand Island died Thursday, July 18, 2002 at the Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Grand Island. Funeral services and burial will be held at a later date in Fairbury, Ne. Mr. Elgert’s remains were cremated. Memorials are suggested to the family. Kleine Funeral Home of Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.
Wayne was born Feb.18, 1921, in Fairbury, Ne., the son of Adolph and Sophie (Huelhorst) Elgert. He graduated from Fairbury High School and went directly into the Ne. National Guard. He served with the 35th. Division of the U.S. Army during WWII and served during the Normandy Invasion, for which he received a citation from France for his service. He married Esther Woltkamp on June 11, 1943 at Dolthen, Alabama. After his discharge he returned home to Fairbury where he and his wife began the Elgert’s Supper Club. Later the family moved to Grand Island where he was sales manager for E. N. Roe Buick and managed several dance bands including the “River City Five”. He was a member of the Grand Island Saddle Club.
He is survived by his wife: Esther Elgert and one son, Lynn Elgert, both of Grand Island. He was preceded in death by his parents.
