who was minister of ye Gospell in this place upwards of 38 years
in ye 59th year of his age

Served as a founding trustee of Yale from October 16, 1701 to March 14, 1703Rev. Israel Chauncey/Chauncy earned his doctorate in Theology from Harvard in 1661. He was the youngest son of the infamous Rev. Charles Chauncey who had been the pastor at Scituate before becoming President of Harvard.

Israel married Mary Nichols, the daughter of Isaac Nichols and Margery Washbourne (also spelled Washburn).

Israel moved to Connecticut and served as pastor of the Congregational Church in Stratford and was instrumental in the starting of Yale College and was one of Yale's co-founders.

Rev. Israel had 3 children with Mary before her untimely death:

1 - Rev. Charles Chauncey (1668-1714)
2 - Rev. Isaac Chauncey (1670-1745)
3 - Robert Chauncey (1677-?)

(From Savage) "He was a minister at Stratford, Conn. where he also resided. A.B. Harvard / co-founder of Yale College.

Chauncey, (Rev.) Israel. Chaplain, King Philip's War, and member of Council of War, Oct. 1675. Granted 200 acres, Oct. 1681. Son of Rev. Charles and Catharine (Eyre) Chauncey; graduate of Harvard College. 1661; Minister at Stratford for more than 38 years.

Married (1) at Stratford, 8 Jan. 1667 [1667/8], Mary Nichols, dau. of Isaac Nichols. Married (2) at New Haven, 11 Nov. 1684, Sarah Hudson. She was dau. of John Hudson, b. 5 Apr. 1657, d. in 1711.

Rev. Mr. Israel, pastor of the Church in Stratford, d. 14 Mar. 1702/3; in 59 yr. (g. s.)".

Israel is buried in the Old Congregational Burying Ground in Stratford, Connecticut. His name on the stone is different from every record of him. It is unknown if the stone maker didn't know how to spell or that whoever told the stone carver how to spell, got it wrong. On the stone it's "Israell Chauncy". In all records it's "Israel Chauncey".

The burying ground was known simply as "the Cemetery" for a number of years because the Congregational Church was the only church in the town.

[ The MA vital records I have found show his birth at Cambridge and his baptism at Scituate. Since his father was at Harvard, that would make sense.
