Ebenezer Bacon Jr. youngest child of 7 of Ebenezer Sr. and Lydia Lathrop Bacon settled the area which became known as Bacon Hill, NY in 1794 and built the first frame tavern. His sister Martha Lothrop Bacon's son Lothrop Pope also settled here and the hamlet was earlier called Pope's Corners. Ebenezer's daughter Margaret married first Reed Lewis 1788-1835 in 1810 and second Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Roberts 1788-1864 in 1840. *Notice that Ebenezer Bacon was first added to Findagrave by Barbara Webster of California in 2007. She was born in 1933 and is a descendant of Ebenezer and of his son-in-law Reed Lewis.
From Grace VanDerwerker's "Early Days In Eastern Saratoga County"-1938p.72: "In 1794, Ebenezer Bacon settled across the road from the Tavern(south). There he opened a store. His daughter married the neighbor Reed Lewis. Between Bacon and Lewis lived Lothrop Pope; hence 'Pope's Corners.' The name of Mrs. Lothrop Pope is among the first members of the Northumberland Church, established in 1820. (Her name was Abigail Newell Pope now buried in Keeseville, NY #33622226).
An Albany record showed that Mr. Pope sold his land to Mr. Bacon.
In due time John Burke became owner of the Lewis home, living here with his sons , Captain Martin Jones and Lawrence Burke, also daughters Sarah and Susan. Here in July 1938 a state marker was erected for our Mexican War hero, Captain Martin Burke, a graduate of West point, a brave soldier, who died at the age of thirty two......
Mrs. Sarah Thompson was the next owner after the Burkes as we will mention. When she went West to live it became the possession of Mr. and Mrs. Reed Peck about 1873. They left it to their daughter Fanny Caroline Peck Macklin."
In Sylvester's 1868 History of Saratoga County it shows Ebenezer as the 1797 Saratoga Town collector. His sons settled in Ogdensburg, NY and Prescott, Ontario just across the St Lawrence River.
