HELEN MARGARET KUYKENDALL DeVORE

Entered Peacefully into rest at her San Lorenzo home following a courageous battle due to age related causes on March 19 2020. She was 91 years old.

She was the sixth child born to Warren Bennett Kuykendall and Ollie Bell Gregory Kuykendall DeVore. She was born on October 20, 1928, in Pocasset, Grady, Oklahoma. During her childhood she lived in Oklahoma, Arizona, and California. During the “Dust Bowl” Helen’s family lost their farm and family livelihood. They, for many years after, led a life like the Joad Family, in the Steinbeck novel, “Grapes of Wrath. They followed the agricultural harvesting season to Arizona, then later to California. By her early teens Helens parents were divorced and she lived with her mother in Oakland, CA. At the outbreak of World War II, Helen’s schooling was interrupted as she went to work to support herself and her mother. Her brothers were all in the military. At the end of WWII Helen met the son of a gentleman her mother was dating, and then married Wesley Spence DeVore in Alameda, California, on February 9, 1946,

Helen and Wesley settled in San Lorenzo, California in 1946 and raised her three sons there. While raising her three sons, Helen worked at several jobs; including waitressing at Jumbo Donuts, factory work at Friden Inc., Deputy Sheriff Matron for the Alameda County Sheriff Department, Real Estate agent, and operating her own businesses.

Helen is proceeded in death by her husband of 56 years, Wesley S. DeVore, her parents and her siblings, Alvin Lee Kuykendall, Lottie Bell Steelman Dowhower, Stanley Melton Kuykendall, Warren Bennett Kuykendall Jr. and Eugene Kuykendall.

Helen is survived by her three sons Greggory R. DeVore, MD (Dorothy), of La Canada, CA; James W. DeVore(Patti) of Olalla, WA and Steven A. DeVore (Kathy) of Orem, UT; 19 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; many loving extended family and friends.

Helen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

A memorial will be held at a future date when the environment allows. Helen will be laid to rest at Lone Tree Cemetery.

Memory of a Niece: Paula Durst:
One thing that stands out in my mind, is the many hours she had given to the Vietnam Veterans who had lost their benefits. She had filing cabinets filled with papers and folders, of the histories of the men that she was helping. She did this for more than 5 years. Each vet was given many call backs, keeping them informed of the progress she was making, getting their cases re-opened with the VA. She had a talent for breaking through the red tape, and dealing with the bureaucracy. She did not take no for an answer!
