Word was received here today by relatives of the death of Grandma which occurred Monday at the home of her son, Joseph in Glenwood, Minnesota. The remains will be brought here for burial.
OBITUARY
Charlotte Furtney
On September 22, at the home of her son Joseph Furtney, Glenwood, Minn., occurred the death of one of Austin's oldest settlers, Mrs. Charlotte Furtney at the advanced age of 82 years. Mrs. Furtney has not been in good health for a number of years but the cause of her death was pneumonia.
Deceased was born in Blumberg, Lippy County, Germany, April 22, 1821. When but 14 years of age she removed with her parents to Jamaica Island where they remained for two and one half years. In 1841 they moved to Quebec, Canada. She was there married to Joseph Furtney. They lived there but a short time when they moved to Berlin, Canada and after moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., and from there to Milwaukee, Wis. They also resided at Decorah, Iowa, before moving to this city in 1862.
Mr. Furtney died March 12, 1903 and Mrs. Furtney lived with her children in this city until about two months ago when she left for Glenwood, Minn. to make her home with her son Joseph. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Furtney, four of whom are dead, Henrietta, Lydia, Josiah and William. Josiah of this city died on March 3, 1903 just nine days before the death of his father.
The children who survive to mourn the loss of a devoted mother, the third member of the family to be called away within the past six months are: Aaron of Rockford, MN, Jacob, of Biwabik, Minn., Mrs Hannah Barney of Michigan City, N.D., Joseph, Jr., Glenwood, Minn., Mrs. Al Mattice, Henry and John of this city. Also a brother Ben Hilker of this city. The remains will be brought to this city tonight and taken to the home of her son Henry on East Water street. The funeral will be held from his home tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 and from the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock, Rev. A.H. Miller officiating. The remains will be laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery beside her husband.

Mrs. Charlotte Furtney passed to her final rest on last Monday at the home of her son, Joseph H. Furtney of Glenwood, Minnesota having reached the advanced age of eighty-two years and five months.
Deceased was born in Blumberg, Germany, April 22, 1821. When fourteen years old she left Blumberg and with her parents sailed for the United States when they were overtaken by pirates and were taken to the Island of Jamaica. Here they were held and forced to work in the plantations. After being detained for a period of about three years they emigrated and landed at Quebec in 1838, on the very day that Queen Victoria was crowned. On November 23, 1841 she was united in marriage to Joseph Furtney at Galt, Ontario, Canada. They lived in Blenheim, Canada until 1863 when they moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan: to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1864: Decorah, Iowa and to Austin, Minnesota in 1868. At the latter place she resided until last summer when she came here to make her home with her son, Joseph H. Furtney, of Glenwood, Minnesota and at whose home her death occurred as afore stated.
One brother, five sons and two daughters are left to mourn the death of a loving sister and mother. They are: Benjamin Hilker of Austin, Minnesota, A.W. Furtney of Rockford, Minnesota. J.B. Furtney of Biwabik, Minnesota, Henry and John of Austin, Minnesota and Joseph H. Furtney of Glenwood, Minnesota. The daughters are: Elizabeth (Mrs. A.F. Mattice) of Austin, Minnesota, and Hannah (Mrs. M.H. Barney) of Michigan City, North Dakota.
The remains were taken to Austin, Minnesota by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Furtney where internment was made.
