Son of Hugh W. and Alene Strong Peterson. He was raised in Provo, UT, and attended Provo High School and Brigham Young University. He served during WWII in the U.S. Navy as a medic. He married Donna Andrew on August 18, 1939 in Provo, UT. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Donna passed away in 1978. He married Rebecca Patton Bringhurst on October 12, 1979. His life career began in sales and marketing, eventually settling in Salt Lake City. He successfully continued in that field for over 40 years before retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served in many capacities, including as a missionary with his wife Beckie at the Idaho Falls Temple Visitors Center. He was preceded in death by his parents;, wife, Donna; daughter, Marilyn Poulton; brothers, Ray Peterson, Grant Peterson; son-in-law, Ken Poulton; and daughter-in-law, Laraine Facer Peterson. He is survived by his wife, Beckie; children Robert Peterson (Linda), Lee Peterson (Barbara), Lynn Peterson (Cindy), Gail Fielding (Phillip), Sandra Fagergren (Paul), Trent Bringhurst (Annette), Debra Paull, Tamara Houghton (Mike); brother Howard Peterson (Eva), sister-in-law Eloise Peterson, sister-in-law Renee Alder; 35 grandchildren, and 80 great-grandchildren.
