Former chairman of the Park County Republican Party, Col. James Neil Hickok, passed away peacefully at noon on Monday, March 19, 2001 after battling cancer for more than 13 years.

An active member of the community, he was the chairman of the Park County Republican Party for many years and helped Lake George get their park, library, community center and emergency medical service.

Neil was a devoted family man and loved his family with a passion. He loved the mountains and his home, which overlooks the South fork of the South Platte River. He enjoyed golf, fishing and riding his horse.

His wonderful sense of humor and genuine care for others touched everyone who knew him. He had a vivacious thirst for knowledge and loved to discuss anything and everything, especially politics, with his friends and family.

He had a degree in Military Science from the University of Maryland, and degrees in Anthropology and Geology from the University of Colorado.

Neil retired from the United States Army after serving his country honorably and faithfully for 36 years. He served in China when he was 16 years old, helping to protect the railroads and missionaries. He returned to his home in Washington, graduated from high school and then reentered the service at the start of World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater.

He also served in the Korean Conflict and three tours of duty in Vietnam. He was one of the outstanding members of the "Great Generation." A true hero.
