Barbara Ann Adams, age 67, of Seymour, Iowa, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2020 in hospice care at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Iowa, from complications following a stroke on February 6th.

The daughter of Robert “Bob” and Mary “Laura” (Bryant Purvis) Strunk, she was born on April 21, 1952 in Centerville, Iowa, and was later joined by her sister, Gayle, and her brother, Danny. She attended schools in Moravia, Sewal and Seymour, and graduated from Moulton-Udell with the Class of 1970.

As a young girl, Barbara accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She loved the Lord and reading and studying His word and strived to please Him. Her compassionate heart and desire to help people led her to attend nursing school in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was a nurse at the Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield, Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, and Mercy Hospital in Centerville. She was the baby nurse the night her niece, Molly, came into the world.

On October 24, 1987, in Unionville, Iowa, Barbara was united in marriage to Henry Adams, Jr. After their wedding, the couple moved to Henry’s home state of Maryland. To this union, three daughters were born, Ruth Ann, Rachel Lynn, and Sarah Lou. While living in Maryland, Barbara was active in her local church, worked in home health care, homeschooled her daughter, Ruth, and volunteered many hours at the Catherine Foundation, a crisis pregnancy center.

In December 2001, the family moved to Iowa, relocating in Seymour, where Barbara continued to homeschool Ruth. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Seymour up until the time of her stroke. For several years, she taught a Sunday School class of older adult ladies.

Other areas of ministry she enjoyed were the hours she spent working at the Hope Pregnancy Center in Centerville, and leading Bible studies for residents at the Seymour Care Center.
Barbara loved visiting with people, was an avid reader, enjoyed music, liked watching family friendly movies, and taking drives in the country to see and reminisce about things she remembered from her childhood. In her younger years, she was a talented seamstress, sewing doll clothes for her sister’s dolls. She also made her own wedding dress, as well as her sister’s wedding dress and all other dresses for both weddings. In recent years, she had particularly enjoyed researching her family history and genealogy.

Left to cherish Barbara’s memory are her husband, Henry Adams of Seymour; her daughter, Ruth Adams of Seymour; her sister, Gayle (Steve) Davenport of Coatsville, Missouri; her brother Danny Strunk of Moulton; her niece, Amy (Scott) DeVore and their children, Sydney, Madison and Denver, all of Seymour; her nephew, Joshua (Tara) Davenport and their children, Jodi, Wendi, Clayton and Leland of Unionville, Iowa; her niece, Molly (Jimmy) Carter of Powersville, Missouri; as well as Henry’s siblings and their families and many other relatives and friends.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Laura Strunk; newborn twin daughters, Rachel Lynn Adams and Sarah Lou Adams in 1992; her sister in law, Pam Strunk; and her in-laws, Henry Adams Sr. and Florence Adams.

PRIVATE SERVICES TO BE HELD. Memorials have been established to either the Catherine Foundation Pregnancy Care Center or to the Heartland Pregnancy Center of Ottumwa, and may be dropped off or mailed to Lange Funeral Home, C/O Adams Family, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
