Abel J. Barlow was the only son of Treat Bethuel Barlow and Olive Gavitt, he was born on 18 Aug 1840 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY. He did have nine half brothers and sisters from his mother's previous marriage to Amos Avery.

He married Miss Mary J. Butler, the daughter of Samuel Pine Butler and Lurania Hulce, circa 1863. They had one daughter Carrie Barlow, who died as a child.

Abel served in the Union Army during the Civil War in Co C, 27th Division New York State Volunteers, and was wounded at the Battle of Chattanooga. He was one of the last three surviving veterans of the Civil War in Delaware County at the time of his death and the last survivor from Cannonsville.

He worked as a printer in Albany, Albany Co, NY in 1870. By 1875 he moved to Unadilla, Otsego Co, NY and was the Editor of the Unadilla Times for over fifty years.

He died on 06 Mar 1939 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co, NY, aged 98 Years 6 Months 19 Days.

Abel Barlow, 98, one of the three surviving Civil War Veterans of Delaware County, is seriously ill at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Walley at Cannonsville, where he has been cared for during the last few years. Mr. Barlow, a veteran of Gettysburg, lived many years in Oneonta. His wife passed away a number of years ago.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y., March 6 - 1939
Abel J. Barlow, for more than fifty years editor of The Unadilla (N.Y.) Times, died today at Cannonsville, Delaware County, in his ninety-ninth year.

Mr. Barlow served with Company C, Twenty-seventh Division, New York Volunteers, during the Civil War and was wounded at Chattanooga.

Born in a log cabin on his father's farm at Cannonsville in 1840, he was one of three surviving Civil War veterans in Delaware County. Several nieces and nephews survive. Burial will take place Thursday at Deposit, N.Y.

Cannonsville, March 8 - Funeral Services for Abel J. Barlow, Cannonsville's last Civil War veteran, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Kaye and Guy funeral parlors in Deposit. The Rev. M. W. Pomeroy, pastor of Deposit Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Deposit.

Funeral service for Abel J. Barlow, 98, veteran of the Civil War, who died Sunday at the Millard Walley farm in Cannonsville, will be held at the Kays and Guy Funeral Chapel. A full military service will be held with a firing squad and bugle coming here from Oneonta. The service will be conducted by the Rev. M. W. Pomeroy with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery.

The entire countryside is mourning the loss of this last Civil War Veteran, who was born in Cannonsville and learned the printing business in Deposit. His death leaves Delaware County with but two Civil War survivors, Andrus Crabb of Walton and George Dugan of Roxbury.
