James Robert Hypes, 77, of Bluefield, WV died on Saturday, May 18, 1996 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. He attended Mercer County Schools and was a member of Smith's Chapel Church of the Brethren. He served in the European Theater with the 9th Air Force, 449th Bomb Squadron (45th Air Depot Group) from April of 1942 until demobilization in December 1945. He worked road construction most of his life until he retired from Veceilio & Grogan, Inc. in 1983.

Born in Bluefield on December 30, 1918, he was a son of the late Robert Trent Hypes (1896-1981) and Sally Hazel Carter-Hypes (1897-1930). In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Annie Cordelia Townley-Hypes (1906-1989); sisters, Elizabeth Ann Hypes (Deceased) and Lucille Hypes-Howell (Deceased) & husband Jesse Howell (Deceased); and brothers, Thomas Watson Hypes (1929-1930) and Warren Gerald Hypes (1920-1971).

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Wimmer-Hypes (B. 1932) of the home whom he married on November 1, 1951 in Princeton, Mercer County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Mercer County, WV, 1951, Page 119, Line 40, Application Date: October 27, 1951); son, Blaine Hypes of Bluefield; daughter, Elaine Hypes-Spainhour of Kemersville, NC; grandchildren, Jamie Hypes of the home, Warren Hypes of Princeton, and Jonathan Hypes of Springville, VA; five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; sister, Marshall Hypes-Belcher & husband Thoreau Belcher of Suffolk, VA; half-brother, Henry "Bud" Hypes of Rich Creek, VA; half-sisters, Billie Hypes-Hylton & husband Kenneth Hylton of Bluefield, Jane Hypes-Harmon & husband Ronnie Harmon of Princeton, Carolyn Sue Hypes-Manning (1944-2008) & husband Kenneth Manning (1947-2014) of Beckley, and Brenda Hypes-Myers & husband Charlie Myers of Richmond, VA.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, May 21, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home. Bluewell with the Rev. Robert Motsinger officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.
