On May 2, 1952, God started a generous heartbeat for Admus Gary Blanton. On July 1, 2019, God silenced his heart and accepted him into paradise.

Gary, as he was known, was born in Cumberland County to the late Abraham Lincoln and Rosa Nell (Gary) Blanton. He attended Cumberland County Schools and at an early age, he accepted Christ and became a member of Sharon Baptist Church. In 1967, he moved to New York and worked for Cofire Paving Local #1175, where he retired after 26 years. As a New Yorker, he loved the sport of baseball and was a New York Mets fan. He was a great hitter, fast runner and played on a minor baseball league for many years.

In October 1998, he met and married his one and only wife, Sandra Smith. He also renewed his faith and joined The Mount Horeb Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on the usher board and music ministry.

In 2010, he returned home to enjoy retirement and spend precious time with his 95 year old mother. Gary was known as Scooter man in Farmville. Gary was known for his bossiness and joking. He was kind, caring and generous. His giving was immeasurable. His earthly testimony was his favorite song, “Rough Side of the Mountain”, because he was climbing on the rough side, holding to God’s powerful hand, trying his best to “make it in”.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Sandra (Smith) Blanton; two sons, Gary Willis of New York and Patrick Bailey (Krista) of North Carolina; three step-children, Nichole Wright and Frank Smith of New York and Shana Hill (Anthony) of China; two guardian children, Josie Richardson and Cherise Parker of New York; mother and father-in-law, William and Sammie Smith of New York; two brothers, Rev. Silas Blanton (Tonya) and Curtis B’Lanton (Jennifer); six sisters, Rev. Lucille Maddox, Susie Sanderson, Delsia Blanton, Angela McCorkle, Alice Hamlet and Gloria Vincent (Lawrence); three brothers-in-law, David Smith (Joann), Kenneth Smith and Keith Smith; two sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Smith and Kimberly Smith; sixteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; special cousin, Marshall Blanton; special friends, Doretha (Dee Dee) Walton, Charlie Edward Randolph, Jr., Gary Thomas and Cecil Scott; two dogs, Bonnie and CoCo and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many other buddies
