David M. Crisp, Sr.
May 17, 1945 - March 5, 2020

La Grange-David Melvin Crisp Sr., 74, passed away in the comforts of his home on Thursday, March 5, 2020. David was born May 17, 1945 in Wayne County to the late Melvin DeWitt Crisp and Nina Elizabeth Long Crisp.

If David was your friend you truly had a friend for life. He was a true champion for the underdog and was always willing to give you a second chance. He'd stick with you through thick and thin. He was the kind of friend we all would like to have. David never met a stranger and was quick to strike up a conversation with anyone. No matter where you were, David could find someone he knew or make a connection with someone new.

David was a prankster with a keen sense of humor. If he was picking on you it was safe to assume he truly liked you. With a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous smile, he'd always take the opportunity to needle his closest friends.

David was one to never be still and was always on the move. He'd go anywhere with anybody at any time. Those that knew him best always took some extra underwear because there were no guarantees on when you would return. He loved to travel and was always up to create a new memory or unique experience. A kid at heart, David always looked forward to attending the State Fair every year. If David heard about a festival or auction in the area, chances are you'd see him there.

Competitive at heart, David loved sitting around the table and enjoying a good card game. Many great nights of fellowship were had around the table at Bulltown Hunting Club.

With a big streak of independence, David liked doing things on his terms and in his time. He was never afraid to take a chance and was always up for the challenge. If you look up entrepreneur in the dictionary chances are you'd see a picture of David. He was a jack of all trades and took great pride in figuring things out. He was well-read and knew a little something about everything. You could just ask David and he'd be quick to share.

David enjoyed a long career in the barbecue business. He started working with Wilber's Barbecue at an early age and later ventured to La Grange to open his own restaurant. He loved barbecuing pigs and nothing was better than cooking for family and friends. He later owned and operated his own restaurant equipment business.

David was a longtime member of Goldsboro Masonic Lodge #634. He held numerous leadership positions during his time as a Mason. He took great pride in being a Master Mason. From 2011-2015 David served as the District Deputy Grand Master for the NC Grand Lodge. In 2015 David was recognized by the Masonic Home For Children for his charity, care, and lifetime of service as a Mason and friend to the orphanage. David also served on the Board Of Directors for White Stone Retirement Community.

In 2005 David was recognized as a Kentucky Colonel. This is the highest title that can be bestowed by the governor of Kentucky. It recognizes individuals for outstanding service in their community, state, and nation.

David's greatest accomplishment was his family. He loved gatherings with his family. Things were awesome for David when he was surrounded by Glendora, the children and his grandchildren. David asked nothing more from them than to have some of their time. They will relish their good memories and will miss hearing David's trademark quote, " I meant to tell you."

A service to celebrate David's life will be held Sunday, March 8, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Graveside committal services will be held Monday, March 9, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Mewborn Cemetery.

David is survived by his wife of 39 years, Glendora Browder Crisp; four children, Dava Jean Crisp Rose and Roger, David Melvin Crisp, Jr. and Julie, Mary Beth Edwards and Kyle, Alice Maria Crisp and Dax; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Jacob, Colby, David, Tyler, Rachael, and Curtis; four great-grandchildren, Kloey, Addison, Grayson, and Collins; two sisters, Lib Francisco and husband, Cecil, Mary Hood and husband, Rex; sister-in-law, Beverly Crisp; and a special family friend, Bobby Miller, who David thought of as his own family. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by three siblings, W.D. Crisp, Kenneth Crisp, and Shirlean Crisp.

A time of visitation and fellowship will follow the service Sunday. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Memorials may be made to the Masonic Home For Children, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
