Kay was the fourth child of Italian Americans Emil and Anna LaFazia. She was born at their home at 42 Merino Street in the Hartford neighborhood of Providence during the Great Depression. Growing up, Kay attended Laurel Hill Avenue School and Oliver Hazard Perry Junior High School. She dated classmate Joe Deion in junior high, but broke up with him prior to high school so that she could be unattached and free for dancing. Kay was an avid dancer in her teens -- she spent Wednesday nights at the Swinghaven Canteen on Plainfield Street, and then Friday and Saturday evenings at the local YWCA and YMCA, respectively. She was also active at Mount Pleasant High School, where she took a leadership position as the vice president of her class, which graduated in June 1948.

In 1949, Kay began dating Joe Deion again after he telephoned her. They married on January 6, 1951 at St. Anthony's Church in Providence, while Joe was on his first furlough from the Army National Guard. After their wedding, Kay followed Joe down to Camp Stewart, Georgia, and stayed with him when he was transferred to Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. There she took up work as a bookkeeper for a colonel in the hospital. Joe was eventually sent to Okinawa, Japan. A while after his tour of duty was over, he and Kay settled in Johnston, Rhode Island, and raised three children at their home at 422 Central Avenue. Joe earned a living as a plumber, while Kay worked from the house as a direct distributor for the multi-level marketing company Amway.

Kay was a foodie and a born-again Christian. Though not a member of an organized church later in life, Kay's relationship with God was of utmost importance to her. She prayed for her family every day and called into the 700 Club often. She passed away at ManorCare Health Services-Boynton Beach in Florida.
