illiam was born October 20, 1763 in what was then Little Hoosic, MA. The town is located near what is now, Adams, MA. William enlisted in Little Hoosic on February 16, 1777 for a 3 year enlistment for 6 2/3 dollars a month. He was 5ft tall, had a dark complexion, and dark hair. Joining him was his father William Jr and brothers Henry and Ichabod.

William originally served as a drummer and fifer. Later, he was made a private soldier and joined the regular ranks. William and his family served under the 2nd Massachusetts Bay Provincial Regiment under Captain Warren's Company and Colonel Bailey's Regiment. They later became the 23rd Continental Regiment.

According to William's pension papers, the company marched from Albany to Ft George. From there, they participated in the Battle of Saratoga that Sept and Oct 1777. One their way to meet Washington's army, William became ill near Albany. He received leave from the doctors there for illness. He was considered unable to fulfill his enlistment time and went home to the family farm. The rest of his family wintered at Valley Forge.

William married, probably as his 2nd wife, Phoebe Edwards.
