The 1880 census for Glendale, Beaverhead County, Montana, lists John W. Auringer; age 40, born 1840 in New York; divorced; occupation, teaming. He is noted at various times in the Madisonian newspaper as being a deputy sheriff and a stage driver. The proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of Madison County, Montana in June, 1892, lists the Poor Fund expenditures for the care and burial of J. W. Auringer, and the providing for of his family.

John W. Auringer was born 1843 at Onondaga, New York to Peter Isaac Auringer and Susannah Vroman.

Found in the 1850 census at Fabius, Onondaga, New York: Isaac Auringer 44, Susan 41, Gideon 17, Cordelia 12, John 6, Freeman 3, Franklin 0.

Found in the 1860 census at Albion, Marshall, Iowa: John W Tripp 35, Elizabeth Tripp 29, Isaac Auringer 54, John W 17, Freeman B 12, James A 8.

John W Auringer married Mary Woodworth (b 1846 Vermont) on January 1, 1863 at Albion, Marshall, Iowa.
Believe the couple had 8 children:

Charles (b 1866 Colorado)
Mary (b 1868 Virginia City, Montana)

The couple divorced before 1880. Mary returned to using her maiden name Woodworth and has 2 daughters living with her using the Woodworth surname, Alwilda and Adalia, according to the 1880 census.

Found John in the 1880 cenus living at Glendale, Beaverhead, Montana: John W Auringer age 40. divorced; occupation - teaming.

John married Adelia Violet (Viola) McNeil Rideout on June 5, 1883 at Madison, Montana.
The couple had 2 sons:
John W: James Alexander b May 2, 1887 Madison, Montana
Marion Henry b September 4, 1892 Virginia City, Montana

On September 15, 1887, John W Auringer obtained a land patent.
